Ayurveda is an ancient holistic system of natural healing which originated in India. Ayurveda translates as the science of life (Ayur - life, Veda - science or knowledge). Ayurvedic medicine, as practiced in India, is one of the oldest continuously practiced systems of medicine in the world.
According to Ayurveda, the universe and everything in it, consists of the Pancha Mahabhutas, (five great elements) which are earth (prithvi), water (jala), fire (Agni or tej), air (Vayu) and ether or space (akash). These elements in a variety of combinations, give rise to three main biological forces in the human body, called doshas. The doshas can be compared to the biological humors of the ancient Greek system of medicine and are referred to in Ayurveda as Vata, Pitta and Kapha
